Default *Ding Dong* WINDSHEAR!

Talk about an attention getter! Got one of these on a two mile final at ALB the other day and had to bail out and try it again. Rough day up there ... moderate turbulence below 5000' and winds about 160/20g30 for landing on 19. Fortunately, no windshear warning the second time around, though the airspeed was +/- 10 all the way down. If we'd gotten #2, all those folks behind us were headed for someplace else.

Nice way to spend the last day of a five-day stretch ...

Does your system differentiate between positive performance vs. negative performance windshear?

It does ... the positive triggers a master caution, the negative a master warning. We got the RED one. As soon as it started yelling at us, we were out like a fat kid in dodgeball ....

In about five years of professional flying I have only had 1 real windshear encounter, but what an attention getter! Shortly after takeoff, gear was up but it felt like we hit something and the stall warning went off. The airspeed hung just above rotation speed for what seemed like forever while our groundspeed almost doubled.

We had some NASTY shear last week flying in and out of LAX. Winds were something like 010 at 20 gusting to 31. It caught us off guard because we took off out of Oxnard at 5:30am and it was smooth. We got the winds and then expected it to be bad but not that bad. It took me about 3/4's of the runway to finally get to speed down on the rollout. The second approach on the next time in I gave it some better stick and rudder. It was a good learning expereince.

Glad to hear you guys did ok.

If you think 20 gusting to 31 is NASTY, stick around a while.
