Default ATST portion

Ok, so I am using the Air Traffic Control Career Prep book (the green one) and I had a question about the air traffic control scenario portion of the test. For the airplanes NOT landing, do they have to go out the little space on the screen or can they go out of any portion on that side of the screen?

Thanks in advance!

little portion, and it has to be exactly right and its a giant pain in the ass and if you dont watch them and micro manage they will crash. Its fricking retarded.

Going into the AT-SAT with absolutely no knowledge of what would be on it, I thought that portion of the test was rather simple once you get the hang of it. The nice thing about it was that the aircraft respond instantly to any command you give them (i.e. turns to heading, climbs/descents, are instantaneous). Just have a plan in your head for what you want to do with them and be vigilant. It is kind of a PITA that the exit corridor is so small but at least you won't need to lead them in the turns and altitudes because the reaction time is so fast.

I'm from Ohio as well and I saw you were from Columbus. Are you a controller there? Just wondering.

Nevermind. Just saw that you are in the process of applying. My bad.

No worries... No, I am not a controller, although I did take some ATC classes in my undergrad and enjoyed them. I did tour CMH tracon last night however, pretty impressive facility IMO... it’s only been in commission since 2004. The only other facilities I have ever seen were MSP and GFK, and CMH appeared to be light years ahead of both of them in terms of technology.

Have you selected your geographic preferences yet? I think I'd like to put Ohio down as my first since all of my family is here. Also, where did you take ATC classes? I'm currently pursuing a Bachelors in mathematics and already have an Associates in science. I've read that the CTI (ATC) classes aren't really worth the time or money. Do you have any opinions? Any thoughts at all would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to try my hardest to apply off the street if they ever make an announcement! Thanks!

Still not sure where I want to be, but I'm thinking either somewhere near a beach otherwise the mountains. But Ohio is definitely a good choice, the cost of living here is great and it’s a nice place to live.

I went to school at UND Aerospace and graduated with a degree in business, along with a degree in aerospace science, and also received all of my flight ratings. The ATC program and facilities there are amazing and I got to take a few classes for my aviation degree. After I decided I didn't want to fly planes as a career, I also went and got a dispatcher license and dispatched for a while, that was a blast! In my opinion, the CTI programs are great if you really want to do ATC and that's it, otherwise getting a degree in something else is a good idea especially now that they have this OTS hiring going on. Also, I can see where the CTI would be beneficial to someone with no aviation experience. As for me, with all of the aviation experience I have it just wouldn't be worth putting more money into it. PM me if you have more questions... Best of luck!
