I am trying to become and ATC, just took the test a few weeks ago. Anyway, supposing I am hired, can I take my wife and kids with me to Oklahoma City? Or is it discouraged? |

I don't think it matters.

Sure, but remember, it's $79.50 a day per diem, and $17,046 salary... I'm taking the girlie.

Highly discouraged, at least it used to be. Used to be a Pass/Fail Academy and we had more than a few dozen "fail" with a 69.8 or 69.9. These are the same people that would go home for a long weekend and not study, etc. Obviously things have changed, but I would still not recommend it. Trying to get checked out at A90, CLT and A80 was hard, but getting through the academy (remember at THAT time) was 10X's harder. Hope this helps. CJ @ A80

I'm not bringing my family down with me. I didn't bring them down when I went to Air Force Tech School and I"m glad I didn't. There is just a lot of stuff to learn, especially for someone with no experience. At this time, I could probably bring my family to OKC and it not bother me because i'm a rated controller now, but I'm still not going to because I'd rather just not take the chance of being distracted. I tell everyone this. You have to be extremely dedicated to this job to want to learn it and see it through. My family took a backseat to my training for a couple of weeks. Luckily, I have a wife that understands that and helped me through the training, even though she was raising a 4 month old on her own. |

Some do... some don't. It's a matter of personal preference. If you DO choose to bring the family with you... whatever you do, DON'T take them to the Red Dog.

The Red Dog Saloon... is, as they say, a 'gentlemen's club.'

I say go for it, as long as your fam understands and allows you the quite time that you need to study and stuff go for it. There are a bunch of people here who brought the wife the kids the dog anyone. one even brought their mother. Some of the apt complexes have 2 BR's also so that makes things better.
