| Junior Member | My wife used to be a army air traffic controller, she was tactical for awhile and then fixed base but she has two facility ratings. That was quite a few years ago and she's been out of aviation since then. My question is what type of jobs are available to her that are not directly involved with controlling traffic since she is over the age requirement by two years, plus she also is a few classes away from finishing her degree with Embry Riddle.

| I was an air traffic assistant. Not sure if they even have those anymore, but ATA's staffed the clearance delivery and flight data positions.

| Junior Member | Hey thanks DE727 How do you like Spokane? I used to go back and forth up there to the airforce base when I was with 160th special ops - I loved making that trip.

If she wants a job with the FAA then check out jobs.faa.gov and do a search. Non FAA she could always look into contract tower work. | |

| Spokane is a great town. Suits me well. I kinda don't like the winters but have found that bidding reserve in ONT is a great way out.

| What is her major? Does she have any experience with aviation other than ATC? A lot of people work for the FAA in many different capacities, and she may have a points advantage being prior military. Check out there jobs site someone posted above. |

| The FAA usually keeps the ATA or Flight Data jobs open for controller washouts, it doesn't pay much GS-7, the supervisor of flight data is a GS-9. It's really for the most part a dead end job. Not many people get to move around within the agencey once you get put into Flight Data. Folks that get that position either quit real quick or stay there forever. I think of it as a "being put out to pasture job." I will say a couple of good things about the position, It's easy, not a whole lot of work related stress, relativley good benefits also you don't need a medical. Some centers, Flight Data stays open 24x7, some close up early. Never the less you still get bounced all over the clock. The pay is about $32.000 to $40.000 per year and really doesn't go any higher than that. I spent a little over 2 years as one and resigned, due to basically lack of opportunity and low pay for the location I was in. If she was a certified controller the options I can think of are DOD or contract ATC facilities, another possible option might be NTSB given her back ground and education. Given the fact that the FAA is really starting to hurt BIG time for seasoned Qualified controllers they may be willing to waive the age thing, if not now, perhaps in the near future, depending how bad things get within the FAA. Anyway best of luck to all. |
