Default Re: Current students-Where to live on campus?

Blank,

I lived on campus for 4 yrs before moving off prior to graduation. On campus is about equal cost to off. The good things are you'll save alot on gas, won't have to deal with the inadequate parking situation on campus much, and will always have easy access to any on campus events. The bad of course is you'll have one roommate and/or several suitemates, who you may or may not get along with, and not have much privacy. That being said, here is a rundown on the on-campus dorms:

Doolittle: I started out here, it's called "The Rock" because it looks like a prison and/or bomb shelter, complete with a moat on one side. + is that you'll make friends with pretty much everyone in your hall and in nearby halls, as most people keep their doors open there. We used to go to the beach, go out on the weekends, etc with alot of people from the hall. I still talk to alot of those people I met there 8 yrs later, though they are all over the industry. The rooms are actually pretty large as on campus rooms go, there are two sand volleyball courts around the building, and the new fitness facility/pool is right next door. It's right smack in the middle of campus, and everything is a short walk away. - is that there are community bathrooms with two stalls and two showers, shared by four rooms each. The dorm is old, and you can see the rooms have seen quite afew years of use.

McKay: I'm not sure if they're tearing McKay down, but it looks like a hotel, right across from Doolittle. So all the location advantages are the same there. McKay is another good place to meet friends, as everybody has a deck, and most people hang out outside there. Its a bit old, but the rooms are still in pretty good shape. For a while they were putting 3 people per room there, but since the new dorm was built, hopefully this stopped.

Student Village (Oconner/Stimpson/Wood/Adams) The Student Village is across Richard Petty Blvd, about a half mile or so from the main campus. A bit more of a walk to get to class/flights/etc. It is newer, all the rooms have a nice layout, but the rooms are actually smaller than in the older dorms. In Wood and Adams halls there are two people per room, and each two rooms share a bathroom, so its a little better arrangement than in Doolittle. The SV has its own cafeteria, so you dont have to walk all the way to the main campus to eat. Oconner is a suite arrangement, with a door to the main hall, then four bedrooms, a small kitchen area, and a living room. Each suite houses 8 students. It was kind of nice being able to watch TV out on the couch with the suitemates, instead of being stuck in a small room all the time. Stimpson is two people per room, with a small kitchen area.

Apollo: I don't know much about it, because it was being built when I left! It's the closest dorm to the flightline, and the newest, so I'm sure the rooms are probably pretty nice.

Have fun down there.
