I hadn't heard of that until recently when I rented a hotel room. The lady was asking me for my ID. I handed it to her and then politely asked her out of curiosity what the reason was for checking my age. I didn't realize you had to be 18.....geeeez. They should do like Japan w/ "automated" love hotels.
(and no, that wasn't the nature of my hotel stay, though my gf got carded too. I felt like I was entering a bar.
