From my limited experience, I have to disagree. I can't speak for all jets, but in the CRJ most of the noise is the display cooling fans and outside wind noise. You can barely hear the engines from up front, so its not the high frequencies we have to worry about. I've rode in the jumpseat with earplugs, and compared to my ANR headset, its a huge diference. The earplugs block out at least as much noise as the headset, but the headset just sounds so much better. Also another thing about ANR is it can do the same job but with a smaller headset with less clamping force than a passive headset. So what you end up with is a lighter, smaller, more comfortable headset that fits better in your flight kit.
