On high enroutes - there are DME/DME IRU tags on some of the routes - I can't find much info on them - anyone have a simple one or two sentence explanation on what these are? I know that RNP proc. use these for positioning but that is it. Thanks!
It means that IRU equipped airplanes must be capable of updating their position using DME as the triangulation input. DME is typically the first choice the IRU uses to update its position, followed by combinations of VORs and DMEs and VORs with VORs. The IRU is smart enough to know which navaids provide it with the most accurate positon updating....and I believe that DME input is the most accurate.
