Andy is right, if you're a green crewmember, they will put open time on your reserve schedule to get you off of green as quickly as possible. It sucks if you're a line holder and want open time, but from the company stand point, it makes sense because they avoid having to send you back for a PC or placing you in a green on green situation.
For us new guys, it gives us a chance to get some more time in the airplane before sitting on our hands on reserve. I've tried to bid for open time next month and I tried to pick up a dropped trip but was denied. Apparently a reserve holder can not pick up a drop trip from a line holder. Which is silly because a line holder is looking to get those days off, and here you have a reserve guy itching to fly. You should be able to pick up that trip.
