HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A shortage of experienced air traffic controllers is creating problems for
Tampa International Airport.
A heavy workload and the lack of experienced controllers in recent months created a situation where a small number of planes were allowed to land too closely to other planes.
According to
Bay News 9's partner newspaper,
The St. Petersburg Times, the shortage may get worse as more than half of the veteran air traffic controllers soon will be eligible to retire.
However, airport officials said nearly 30 workers are now in training to help handle some of the workload.
