I was based in SJU for a year and did the commute. Its not bad from NY but chicago would be a little harder. When I was hired we couldn't pick our base before hand. I was the second youngest in class and got to choose between SJU ATR or Saab in LAX. Now I am based in LGA and drive to work. If i got hired now I don't think I would take SJU. Commuting sucks. Its not so much about the actual commute but being based home opens so many options as far a bidding schedules, picking up OT, etc. With that being said I did like flying in SJU and its something that I can always look back on and enjoy the memories. Hell I might go back down their for a captain upgrade. I'd probably just take ORD if I were you but thats just me. PM me with any questions.
