Default Re: What is an MEC?

MEC = Master Executive Council. It is the governing body at the airline level within ALPA. Example: Delta MEC, NWA MEC, CAL MEC, Comair MEC, ASA, MEC, etc.

The next term that you will hear is LEC. That is the Local Executive Council. That is the governing body at the Domicile level. Examples: Delta 44 (Atlanta), NWA 1 (Minneapolis), CAL 171 (Houston), XJT 177 (Newark).

The MEC is made up of the Reps that make up the LECs. Each LEC has a Captain Rep and a FO Rep. Some have more if they have block representation but, that is a lesson for another day.

So, the Delta MEC is made up of the ATL LEC reps, CVG, LEC reps, NYC LEC reps, SLC LEC reps, LAX lec reps, and the training dept reps. At the "front table" is the MEC Chairman, Vice-Chair, and Secretary/Treasurer. Then there are the various committees and their members.

Basically, it is kinda like Congress. ALPA is more of a representational republic (just like the USA) than a democracy.
