An abort after V1 could get you and your crew killed. If your aircraft operating procedures dictate that you continue after V1 and you have every reason to believe that the airplane will perform, you need to follow the emergency procedures exactly. If the pilot wasn't following SOP in this accident, the crew was lucky. Taking an airplane into the air after V1 is safer than aborting in the emerg procedures that call for it.
