You will have to be prepared to be away..and i REALLY mean AWAY, for around 20 days a month. 20 days in a row, not out and backs with a day in between. The way the schedules work, you could possibly be gone for around 40 days straight when the schedules come together the wrong way. This is a serious consideration if you have any reasons like a wife, gf, kids that you want to be around for.
You definately need to consider the possibility of being stuck as an FE for longer than you want as well. If you get stuck in the FE seat for a year, then get furloughed, you are SOL as far as being flying current.
Other than those I think it would be a great opportunity to fly a really cool plane all over the world. |
Good points. For me personally, even with the 20 days away, I'd be able to spend more time with my fiance. Unfortunately, at the moment, she's a grad student 375 miles away from my outstation, so we don't get together as much as I'd like. Home basing would allow me to spend more time with her with those 10 days, allow us to move in together (saving us a lot of money-- me especially. Cost of living where I am is significantly more than where she is). Actually, even with taking a 'pay cut', I'd have more money in my savings account.
There is no way in hell I'd do the FE thing though for the reasons listed above. Only if I could get an FO slot would I consider this--- their website is showing 2000tt as mins to be an FO. I've got that plus 600. I'll wait at least a month and a half to get my 1000TPIC before I do apply.
The things I've never really found out though, is where do they go? I just keep hearing worldwide. Is the majority of their flying still DOD... if so, I would guess a lot of flying to germany and the middle east. Any other places that are common?
