I eventually had a student pay for both my multi-engine rating AND my MEI, because she needed me to provide training for her in her newly-acquired pressurized multi-engine aircraft. What - not enough multi-PIC time to get your MEI? She paid me to ferry another of her new twins across the country to gain that time.
Total cost for my multi AND MEI? I think I put a couple of thousand in my pocket to get those tickets.
In todays market, I'm pretty sure that you can find those same opportunities. You have to work for them, though.
