That sounds really odd. Based on what you have said it sounds like you made a very, very prudent choice. Perhaps an inconvenience to your pax and the company, but much less inconvenient and expensive than several possible outcomes I can think of. I wouldn't blink if the ATIS is calling freezing rain; I'm going someplace else.
Good luck with your fight. It sounds like you have two solid legs to stand on with this one.
