That's insane.

I'd wanna be down there for at least four to six days to make the long flight worth it. I went in October and it was a good time. Sydney then Melbourne.

If you have an international jumpseat agreement on UAL which I assume you do, try that. If you can't get on United then there is Qantas as you mentioned. I ended up going down there on them and back on United (business class!).

The real guaranteed way to get from the west coast to SYD is Atlas Air with a 30 minute fuel stop in HNL.

UAL did not charge me the $85 departure tax in MEL. That's twice this year they forgot.
