Do I have to tell them when I turn base?

Read it back as: Turn base my discretion (call sign). I'm not a tower controller but I would call it as a courtesy. XXX Tower, N12345 turning base...

Learn to use good phraseology from the start...you'll sound more professional on the frequency as you progress. You wouldn't believe some of the read backs I get from pilots. I call traffic and hear "got em' on the fish finder" "cranking her over to heading XXX". All kinds of stuff. Yeeeeeeaaaaa... center. American 123 with ya at FL340 smooooooooooooooooooth ride. How are the rides ahead ? Any reports ?

Keep it brief and simple on the frequency. There is one exception... there is a jetBlue pilot (I think he is a Captain) who every time he checks on frequency says - jetBlue123 with ya ... GREAT DAY ! Says it when he gets the frequency change also. He sounds so happy it's unreal...
