I did the same as you. I went on ebay and purchased three GPS systems. One was the Magellan 315, one Airmap 100 and another I can't remember. None cost me more the $150. More importantly, I utilize them for night cross countries, and they are superb.

When I step up to a larger aircraft, I'll probably purchase the Garmins, but right now. . .these GPS systems are great.
