It's better to ask for help before the before start, because you know you'll be asking for help if something happens later on... remember: "calls will be answered in the order that they are received." You don't have to participate, but a persons religious beliefs are integral to their life and it's just good CRM to keep the lines of communication open in the cockpit.

I see nothing wrong with prayer as long as the person prays to themselves discreetly.
