A friend of mine is a retired AA Captain. He once mentioned a similar situation where a 121 crew he knew of had landed at the wrong airport, realized the mistake and then simply departed again. Lost their jobs of course. Had they stayed on the ground, confessed and straightened the issue out their employment status would have remained the same.
