What happens if a pax opens an exit during a lengthy ground delay?
They can expect to be greeted by a friendly represenative of the local law enforcement. Once they open an exit and are on the ramp, they are now a non-authorized person in a SIDA.
Keep in mind that the greatest number of injuries during an evacuaiton comes from the actual
evacuation itself. Things like broken ankles from coming down the slide and hitting the ground. If you're going out a window exit on an 88, it's a
lot farther to the ground than it looks
Be
very, very sure that the conditions outside the airplane really are better than conditions inside
The local authorities are not just going to take you to the terminal and set you loose. You will have to answer for your actions. With that being said, I really can see where people would seriously consider throwing the exits, consequenses be damned. I'm not going to tell you to
never ever open or threaten to open an exit, because individual circumstances can vary. Widely. BUT, be prepared to be responsible for those actions, including possible injury due to evacuation (to yourself and others who may follow you), and charges from local law enforcement. If the conditions that caused you to throw the exit were bad enough, they may be lenient, they may not.
If there's a raging blizzard outside, please don't jump. It's cold out there. It's slippery, and depending on conditions an emergency vehicle may have trouble getting to you. Being outside wandering the ramp of an airport is no place to be during a blizzard.
