It's maybe about 15 minutes from KPHX. You don't need to rent a car if you want to come, Sky Harbor is mostly on my way to the venue, and I'd be happy to give you a ride if you wanted to join everyone.
I'm not sure about the specific hotels around it, but it is Scottsdale, so I'm sure they're not that cheap. But once again, I could give a ride in the direction back towards the airport, or another JC member could probably give you a ride in another direction (as we come from all over the valley). PM me if you'll need a ride, it's really not a problem...
