While I see your point. See mine also, if you don't start young then the child (any child) will/may grow up to be weak have a victim mentality, codependancy and a favorite for playground bullies.
Now, I'm not saying slap your kid everyday to make him mean so he hates everyone and is the ultimate playground fighting machine.
Just teach him or her not to value friends over self and to assert individuality, be able to think for ones self and when to say no, and when to fight back.
