Try not to worry too much about shortening the distance because aside from checking that requirement off for the lesson the TCO also dictates how much solo cross country time you're required to get. Doing a hundred mile trip wont get you close to that time. I had to do an extra cross country in 221 because of that. Also, by the time you finish 323 you need 98 hours in the commercial instrument course. Most people finish with around 85 hours and have to make up the other set of hours as cross countries. If you plan ahead now, you'll reduce the amount of hours you have to fly later...just a thought.
