Fake (sort of).

They were using the airplane for part of a movie being filmed. Pyrotechnics were placed in positions that were supposed to give the engine appearance of fire (society's perception of engine fire, not necessarily accurate reflection of it) and the pyrotechnics malfunctioned, blew up and took half the engine with it.
