Sounds to me like you're describing sleep paralysis? I've had this happen twice in my life, both times when I was under a lot of stress. It starts out with an intense dream, then you're "awake" but completely unable to move. It's hard to tell if you're even awake or not. When this happens, it's common to have a strong feeling that there's another "presence" in the room. It's sort of a horrible experience. Sleep paralysis is believed to be what causes hallucinations of aliens or demons visiting people at night.
