Not sure if you need the FCC license, you get it from the FCC website though and it's good for life. So I'd say just pony up the fifty bucks and get it. Have fun trying to figure out where it is in the website though. I had a cheat sheet that showed me exactly what to click on and I still can't tell you how I did it.
