well, in essence, arent you just going to find the force (m*a) applied to the launcher, then since you know the force and mass of the child launched, that gives you his acceleration....and you know that he will then be decelerated by g.....giving you the time in air....

this is much easier to explain if i hadnt had a six pack (cooled by my brand new EXPRESSJETS coozie i found around campus yesterday!)
