To me, no, because it's specific training that is geared toward a select employer, unlike the Commercial or ATP which you need for a job anywhere, and could be used for just about any job in aviation. Granted a 737 type is pretty useful since almost every major airline and discounter in the country uses them, but beyond that, I can't see a justification to pay for a type rating. IMO, it's still a pretty crappy thing for a company to require you to have prior to employment.
