I met most of my very good friends my whole college career in the dorms. Grand Forks is no metropolis, but if you understand that you are going to the midwest and not the damn country club you'll be ok. Enjoy some of the differences of the ways of life. It will open your eyes, if you let it, to a new type of people. Remember, that first wonderful regional job might put you in a podunk town too. Mine did, and I'm glad I had the UND experience to prepare myself. Just because you are from San Diego, or some other big city, you are not any better than the person who grew up in Grand Forks, you just have different experiences.

Oh, and nobody cares how nice your car is, especially when you get that great new job when you graduate.
I was just thinking that yesterday about how well Grand Forks should prepare me for living in any part of the country. I actually think that I will be extremely happy to move to a town that gets snow only in December through February as opposed to October through April, since most of the rest of the country is like that (as far as snow). Getting into the regionals will require that I'm prepared to live anywhere, which I am.

In spite of the negatives I've been pointing out about Grand Forks, I really must recognize positive things that I take for granted. Grand Forks has almost non-existant crime and has a relatively low cost of living. It's also a great place to go to school because there are hardly any distractions. People are definately very polite and more willing to provide assistance to a complete stranger than many parts of this country.

While I know I may be offending some people who really have a deep appreciation or love for Grand Forks, I must say that it's just a way for me to deal with living in a different environment that I am not used to. I've already gotten quite used to it and will try to be more positive about the good things that this place actually has to offer. It is true that with a really great circle of friends, any place can be livable.
