I would bet $5 he is talking about radial engines. When I was flying piston Convairs, the engines would frequently stall out(like old carburetor car engines would do) while going into reverse. You had to put alot of power into the engine while the prop was in transition to reverse pitch, or it would caugh and die! Not a good thing while your landing on slippery/icey runways. The engine made a really loud grown as the prop passed fine pitch, but to keep it running you had to.
This exact thing happened to be while doing OE on a guy in the piston while landing on a snowy runway in CVG. Nothing like sliding down the runway sideways.... Those radial engines were a handfull sometimes!
JT-3 engine DC-8's were very bad about compressor stalling at low power settings, but I don't remember about hearing them doing it while in reverse.
