Couldnt you call back up and change the time before it expired, or do you have to cancel it and refile?

Sounds like his boss must be really late since normally they hold a flight plan for two hours after planned departure time. I will often call the tower (controlled field situation) and ask them to keep it open it if it looks like it is going to be longer than that. Or just let it expire and refile when they show up.

I learned something new the other day (actually I probably learned it in the past, just forgot over time!). I was in the FBO and the pax were due to arrive shortly, and I see the tower phone number listed on the wall. Rather than wait until we're loaded up, or going out to the plane and firing up a radio to get my clearance (and maybe not be inside when the pax show), I figured I'd call 'em on the phone and get my clearance and save a couple minutes of time. Single pilot operation so there is no one else along to delagate that to. Nope, no can do the tower operator tells me. Unlike a call to an FSS, the tower phone is not a recorded line, and I have to do it over the radio so it's all on the record. Makes sense, I guess. I just hadn't thought about that aspect of the procedure.

I remember Wilson Air in MEM had a radio/telephone for clearance delivery in there wx room. Made it really nice to have all that sort of stuff done before you went.
