Dude, $153 for a 172 is insane. You can get a twin for that in some areas. A fancy GPS and leather interior should not give FBOs free reign to rip people off like that. $36/hr for instruction is about standard in a lot of places. I think that's the going rate for flight schools in Orlando right now. As far as "ground school," in a Part 61 environment, I've never seen a use for a formalized ground school. You can learn as much from one-on-one ground lessons with your instructor and a book than you can in a formal ground school.
