Actually it's already a gas. If it's in a solid or liquid form, you've got even bigger problems [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

The bends has to do with the saturation point of a gas dissolved within a liquid for a given pressure. There exists a pressure gradient that allows a dissolved gas to remain in solution as long as the rate of pressure change isn't pushed beyond a certain point.

If you ascend, and therefore decrease the pressure exerted on your body at a rate higher than your body is naturally able to deal with (via respiration), your body is unable to keep the nitrogen dissolved in solution and the nitrogen comes out of solution and bubbles form. The bubbles, if left to grow large enough, can do some pretty severe things. They can collect in joints, travel in the blood stream to your brain and can actually cause an aneurism. It can be painful and it's definitely not a good thing.
