Well, the average waist size for men is now 40 inches. And the average size for a woman is a size 12.

If you divide the 40 inch waist in two, you're looking at 20 inches. Then take off another few inches because nobody has a zero inch width -- on me, it looks like there's another two inches on each side -- and you're looking at 17-18 inches.

So, yeah, the average Joe can fit into an airplane seat, even though we are rapidly becoming a nation of lardbutts.
