Or that the crew that installed the inflight entertainment system hadn't bypassed the cabin bus switch.

Or the the "fire proof" insulation on the MD-11 was really fire proof.

Technically that plane was subject to US GOVERNMENT regulations because the flight originated in the US. Unless I am terribly misinformed, (which happens) flights originating or landing in the US must meet all FAA safety regulations.
