Justin, it sounds like the chief CFI is testing your manhood a bit. Yeah, you're young, and yeah, you respect the dude, but if you want him to respect YOU, you need to find an equally tactful way of telling him to stick it.

Something along the lines of "I hear where you're coming from and respect your views, of course, but the reason our friend left for greener pastures has nothing to do with me and everything to do with him and his level of satisfaction here. For whatever reason, he wasn't happy here and needed something that the club couldn't/wouldn't provide. The simple fact of the matter is that if he was happy here, he wouldn't have accepted work elsewhere. If I've helped an unhappy instructor move on to a happier place, then I've actually done you and OUR flying club a favor."
