Since he mentioned a loan, I think he's thinking ahead and trying to figure out if he will be able to afford the payments if he has to pay for FO training....that being said:

If a company charges you for your training, run away. FAR away. Some regionals will pay you for your time, but they won't pick up the hotel room. Some regionals don't pay for either. Personally, I don't like the way that some airlines (cough)Pinnacle(cough) handle how they pay people in training. Mesa doesn't cover the hotel, but they at least pay you while you're in ground school. Not sure what Mesaba, CHQ, SkyWest, Eagle, etc do.
