Default Re: Who is required to be type-rated?

It just depends ...

In the US there is no FAA requirement for Copilots to be type rated, but in alot of other ICAO countries, Canada included, both pilots are required to be type rated.

While there is no FAA requirement, the insurance companies are pushing to have both crew members typed. My company just renewed our policy and they put a rider on our program that both pilots have to be typed. That's not a problem most of the time as both of us are typed, but it limits our pool or part timers, none of which are typed. Spending 27K on a part timer is not the answer so we went through the same argument with the insurance company who will "authorize" on a case by case base who can fly with us part time. Our current pool of part timers average over 6000 flight hours and have either flown for a major airline or for the Military, so its not like we are trying to pull one over on the insurance company. Its a shadow of what is comeing to the US.
