I think they are doing it out of desperation. Personally. They have leases to pay on the jets and this is just a way to do that.
Republic did the same, look at the HI operation as well as buying up Frontier and Midwest. As did Mesa and Expressjet, and ACA. Branded operations really don't do so well especially with RJ's.
If anyone can do it however, Skywest can. They have a good product and a great leadership team.
